Why EFCC Arrested Social Media Influencer VeryDarkMan

Popular social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over claims of online harassment.

An EFCC official, who didn’t want to be named, confirmed the arrest and said that several people had complained about VDM using his social media to insult and threaten them — which could break Nigeria’s Cybercrime Law of 2015.

The EFCC didn’t say who made the complaints or give more details.

This isn’t the first time VDM has had legal issues. In May 2024, he was charged with cyberstalking for allegedly harassing the police and actresses Iyabo Ojo and Tonto Dikeh. He said he was not guilty.

In November 2024, he faced new charges for allegedly pretending to be a police officer. He was granted bail for ₦2 million.

He was also sued by Bobrisky for ₦1 billion after VDM claimed Bobrisky bribed EFCC officers — a claim Bobrisky denied, saying the audio was fake and made with AI.

In April 2025, a court ordered VDM’s arrest again over comments about gospel singer Mercy Chinwo. He was told to delete the post and apologize publicly.

His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, said he will be back in Abuja soon to help secure VDM’s bail. He added that the EFCC has not yet explained what the new charges are about.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore criticized the arrest. He claimed the EFCC wants to silence VDM because he spoke out about alleged corruption in the agency. Sowore said the EFCC should not handle defamation or cybercrime cases, and called for VDM’s immediate release.

Sources say the EFCC may file official charges against VDM as early as Monday. The EFCC spokesperson was not available for comment
