US charges Venezuelan President, Wife with drug trafficking

The United States has charged Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, with several criminal offences.

The US Attorney General, Pamela Bondi, announced that both were indicted by a court in the Southern District of New York.

Earlier, the United States carried out airstrikes in Venezuela and arrested President Maduro and his wife during a military operation. US President Donald Trump said the operation was done with the support of US law enforcement agencies.

In a statement posted on X on Saturday, Bondi said the charges include international drug trafficking and weapons-related crimes.

She said Maduro is facing charges such as narco-terrorism conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess such weapons against the United States.

Bondi added that Maduro and his wife will be tried in the United States and will face justice in American courts.

“They will soon face the full force of American justice on American soil,” she said.

She also praised President Trump for approving the operation and thanked the US military for what she described as a successful mission.

The United States has accused Maduro for many years of leading an international drug trafficking network, an allegation he has always denied.
