President Bola Tinubu has signed the 2022 Election (Amendment and Re-enactment) Act of 2026 into law. This came after approval by the National Assembly following months of discussion.
The law has sparked debate, especially about how election results will be transmitted.

Some lawmakers and opposition members want results sent electronically in real-time to ensure transparency.
Others are worried about technical problems and want to use paper forms as a backup if electronic systems fail.
In the Senate, disagreement over Section 60, which deals with electronic result transmission, led to a split vote.
Out of 70 senators, 55 supported using paper forms as a backup, while 15 opposed it.
The House of Representatives also had disagreements when a proposal to repeal the law was challenged, but the Speaker confirmed the law.
The new law comes ahead of the 2027 elections, which include the presidency, National Assembly, governorships, and state assemblies.
