Peter Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has said that more than 1,000 Nigerians were killed between January and February 2026.
He also stated that thousands of people were kidnapped within the same period.

He made this known on his page on X (Twitter) on Sunday.
Obi said the scale of attacks in Nigeria has reached a level worse than that of some countries officially at war.
He criticized political leaders, saying they are more focused on preparations for the 2027 elections instead of protecting citizens’ lives.
According to him, bandit and terrorist attacks have affected more than 25 states, with killings, kidnappings, and destruction of communities recorded.
He added that many families in states such as Zamfara State, Benue State, Plateau State, and Ondo State have lost loved ones, while some communities have fled their homes due to fear and violence.
He called on the government to make human life its top priority.
“It is deeply troubling to see politicians busy preparing for the 2027 elections while over 1,000 Nigerians have been killed and many more kidnapped in just the first two months of 2026.”
“Leadership is not about winning elections but saving lives. We must prioritize security and the dignity of Nigerians and treat human life as the most important value.”
Obi also said history will remember leaders for the actions they took to protect citizens at such a time, not for the political strategies they pursued.
