Norway Court Jails Nigerian Footballer Over Rape Allegation

A court in Norway has sentenced Nigerian footballer Daniel Daga to six months in prison after finding him guilty of having sexual relations with a woman without her consent.

The judgment was announced on Tuesday. The court also ordered the 19-year-old player to pay a fine of 10,000 Norwegian kroner, according to Norwegian television station TV 2.

The report said the sentence was the same punishment requested by the prosecutor.

However, Daga’s lawyer, Astrid Bolstad, said the player is very unhappy with the court’s decision and insists that he did not commit the offence.

Bolstad said Daga is deeply worried about the judgment and believes that what happened between him and the woman was with her consent. She added that the player plans to appeal the court’s decision.

In a statement released later on Tuesday, Molde Football Club said Daga will not be included in the team’s squad for matches this week because of the court ruling.

Daga joined Molde before the start of the 2025 season and played 15 matches, scoring three goals.

Before moving to Europe, he played in the Nigerian Premier League for Enyimba.

At the international level, he also played for Nigeria’s Under-20 national team, where his performances attracted interest from several European clubs before he eventually joined Molde FC.
