Nigeria Edge Out Algeria, Secure AFCON Semi-final Spot Against Morocco

Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered a commanding performance to defeat Algeria 2-0 in a thrilling 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final clash on Saturday evening in Marrakech, setting up a highly anticipated semi-final showdown with tournament hosts Morocco.

The Super Eagles displayed clinical finishing and resolute defence, leaving the Algeria’s Desert Warriors with no answers.

The first half saw both teams battling for control, with Nigeria creating several dangerous opportunities. However, it was in the second half of the game that the Super Eagles truly soared. Just two minutes after the restart, star striker Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 47th minute with a powerful header from close range, assisted by Bruno Onyemaechi.

Nigeria continued to press their advantage, and it wasn’t long before they doubled their lead. In the 57th minute, Akor Adams capitalised on a swift counter-attack, expertly slotting home a left-footed shot to make it 2-0, with Osimhen turning provider.

Algeria, despite making several substitutions, including the introduction of Baghdad Bounedjah and Anis Hadj Moussa, struggled to penetrate Nigeria’s organised defence. Attempts from Ramy Bensebaini and Baghdad Bounedjah went wide or were blocked by a disciplined Nigerian backline and alert goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

The Super Eagles managed the game effectively in the closing stages, making tactical substitutions to consolidate their lead. Despite a late flurry of Algerian attempts, Nigeria held firm to secure a well-deserved victory.

Nigeria’s impressive display sends a strong message to their next opponents. They will now face a formidable challenge against host nation Morocco in what promises to be an electrifying semi-final encounter.
