Nigeria’s security agencies have arrested 16 soldiers accused of planning to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.
The National Defence Headquarters said the soldiers were arrested in October after reports suggested they were preparing a coup.
Investigations began after the soldiers were suspected of breaking military rules.
Some of the soldiers admitted to planning the coup.
The Nigerian military said their actions violated both military laws and the country’s constitution.
The military added that the suspects will face trial in a military court.
There have been frequent rumors of coup attempts in Nigeria due to economic pressures and political tensions, but the military often denies such claims.
Since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999, the army says it takes coup threats very seriously.
