Kano Government Rejects New Tax Reform Bills

The Kano State Government has openly opposed the proposed tax reform bills currently being discussed in the National Assembly.

Speaking at the 2025 New Year celebrations held at Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa, Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, shared the government’s stance.

The statement was released by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu.

Gwarzo stated, “The proposed tax reform is not the solution to our economic problems. Kano State strongly rejects any policy that will harm the welfare of our people.”

He praised the resilience of Kano residents in facing economic challenges and called the proposed tax increase “ill-timed and unfair.” He added that the government should focus on tackling poverty and hunger, especially in the northern region, which is struggling with inflation and insecurity.

The Deputy Governor also highlighted the government’s achievements in healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarships. He reminded citizens of the Supreme Court’s ruling in January 2024 that confirmed Governor Yusuf as the rightful leader of Kano State.

Gwarzo also celebrated the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2024, calling it a victory for the people. He emphasized that appointing an Emir is the sole responsibility of the Governor and urged others to respect Kano Emirate’s laws and maintain peace.

Finally, he encouraged the people of Kano to stay united and optimistic, saying, “Let 2025 be a year of progress and prosperity for all. Together, we will builda better Kano.”
