The Nigerian Army has arrested Sheriff Umar, identified as a key planner of suicide bombings in the North-East.
The arrest followed an intelligence operation in Maiduguri on December 31, 2025, where soldiers first detained 14 suspects linked to suicide attacks. Investigations later confirmed that Sheriff Umar, also known as Yusuf, was the leader of the group.

Army officials said he was in charge of recruiting and sending suicide bombers, as well as supplying explosives. He was linked to the suicide bombing at Gamboru Market Mosque on December 24, 2025, and a failed attack in Damaturu.
Investigators also found that his wife and stepdaughter were aware of the activities. All suspects are still in custody as security forces work to dismantle the network.
The army urged the public to stay alert and report suspicious activities, stressing that community support is key to ending terrorism in the region.
