IWD 2026: NUJ FCT Chairman Urges Greater Investment in Women

The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called for greater investment in women, saying empowering women will strengthen families, communities and the nation.

In a statement to mark the International Women’s Day, Ike said the 2026 theme, “Give To Gain,” highlights the importance of supporting women through education, mentorship, opportunities and resources.

She noted that investing in women benefits society as a whole because empowered women contribute more to their communities and workplaces.

“When we intentionally invest in women through education, mentorship, opportunity and resources, we are not merely supporting individuals; we are strengthening families, communities, institutions and nations,” she said.

Ike, who is the first female chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, said her leadership journey shows what is possible when women are given the opportunity to lead and succeed.

She also praised the role of female journalists in Nigeria, saying many of them have shown resilience and professionalism while reporting important issues and mentoring younger colleagues.

“Across Nigeria, female journalists are breaking new ground, covering difficult beats, shaping public discourse and mentoring younger colleagues, proving that excellence knows no gender,” she said.

She added that organisations and institutions must do more to support women by creating safe workplaces, providing leadership opportunities and ensuring women’s voices are included in decision-making.

Ike also called on governments, media organisations and communities to work together to remove barriers that limit women’s progress.

She encouraged stakeholders to continue supporting women, noting that when women succeed, journalism and society also benefit.
