The Minister thanked the union for its support and said the Ministry’s work affects all Nigerians because it handles security, borders, citizenship, and national assets.
He explained that the media is very important in a democracy because government cannot work alone. He said when information is not shared, people may rely on wrong assumptions. So, sharing facts helps build trust.
Tunji-Ojo described the relationship between the Ministry and journalists as a partnership based on accountability and national interest. He welcomed plans for regular press briefings and meetings so the public can better understand government reforms.
He also praised the media for fair reporting and said constructive criticism helps improve government policies and performance.
Earlier, NUJ President Alhassan Yahaya said the visit was to strengthen cooperation. The union praised the Ministry’s security reforms and promised to support efforts to raise public awareness on national security.
The NUJ suggested holding press briefings every three months and invited the Minister to speak at its upcoming meeting. The union also asked for support in training journalists, especially on reporting security issues responsibly.
Both sides agreed to keep regular discussions to build public trust, promote unity, and keep citizens informed about security and governance.
The meeting ended with a shared promise to work together for the benefit of Nigerians.
