INEC registers two new political parties, total now 21

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered two new political parties, raising the total number of registered parties in Nigeria to 21.

The parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), which met all constitutional and legal requirements, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), registered in compliance with a Federal High Court order in Lokoja, Kogi State.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced this on Wednesday in Abuja at the commission’s quarterly consultative meeting with leaders of political parties.

Amupitan said that out of 171 associations that applied for registration, only 14 were pre-qualified, eight submitted the required documents, while only two scaled the final assessment stage.

He added that certificates of registration would be issued to the two parties in due course.
