Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said the United States may take strong interest in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections because of its strategic interest in the country and Africa.
Speaking on Channels Television, Dogara said the current global order is weak, and powerful countries now focus mainly on protecting their own interests. He warned that Nigeria must be careful or risk having its future decided by others.

According to him, the US and other major powers are concerned about Nigeria’s stability because any crisis in Nigeria could affect the whole of Africa. This, he said, may lead to increased international attention on Nigeria’s next elections.
Dogara also addressed reports that the Nigerian government paid $9 million to a US lobbying firm. He said lobbying is normal in international relations, but such a large amount would be too high if true. He added that any engagement with foreign lobby groups should be transparent and reasonable.
He stressed that Nigeria must act strategically in its foreign policy, especially as global politics becomes more uncertain.
