Diaz and Kane Give Bayern Champions League Win Over Real Madrid

Luis Diaz and Harry Kane scored the goals that helped Bayern Munich beat Real Madrid 2-1 away from home in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Kylian Mbappe scored for Real Madrid with 16 minutes left to play.

That goal gave the 15-time champions hope for the second leg.

Bayern played very well in the first half. They could have scored more goals. But at halftime, they were only leading 1-0 from Diaz’s goal.

After the break, Kane made it 2-0. But then Mbappe scored to make it 2-1.

Bayern’s goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, said after the match: “It’s a shame it wasn’t 2-0 at the end. Real Madrid are very dangerous. We are happy to win away, but the second leg will be tough.”

Real Madrid’s defender, Antonio Rudiger, said the two goals Bayern scored were “gifts.” He added, “We are still alive because of Mbappe’s goal. Everything is still open.”

Bayern had not beaten Real Madrid in their last nine matches. They came to Madrid determined to win.

In the first half, Bayern missed some big chances. Real Madrid tried to score on fast breaks, but Neuer saved shots from Mbappe and Vinicius Junior.

Bayern’s first goal came in the 41st minute. Gnabry passed the ball to Diaz, who scored past the Madrid goalkeeper.

Kane was not fully fit because of an ankle problem. But early in the second half, he received a pass from Olise and curled the ball into the bottom corner. It was his 11th Champions League goal this season.

Vinicius had a chance to score for Madrid but missed. Neuer made more good saves to stop Mbappe.

After Jude Bellingham came on as a substitute, Madrid played better. With 74 minutes gone, Alexander-Arnold crossed the ball to Mbappe, who smashed it into the net off the crossbar.

Bayern tried to score again but could not. They will take a small lead back to Munich for the second leg next Wednesday.
