Adebayo Accuses Akpabio of ‘Setting Nigeria on Fire’ Over Election Transparency

Former presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio, saying he is causing chaos in Nigeria over how election results are shared electronically.

Last week, the Senate passed the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Reenactment) Amendment Bill 2026.

However, the Senate rejected a change in the bill that would have made electronic transmission of election results mandatory.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Adebayo said the Senate President, influenced by “saboteurs,” is creating problems instead of supporting transparency in elections.

Adebayo also mentioned other election problems, like excessive campaign spending and vote buying, and urged senators to act in the interest of the people.

He said Akpabio should remember that his position is because of the support of the people of Akwa Ibom, not because he is superior to others.

Adebayo called on him to step back and correct his actions to protect democracy.

The Senate will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, to discuss the bill again.

Lawmakers were instructed to meet at the National Assembly at noon. The emergency session is part of growing pressure for the Senate to reconsider the electronic transmission clause in the bill.
