How Fake News Threatens Ex-Minister’s Lai Mohammed Marriage

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, former Minister of Information and National Orientation, revealed how false information on social media almost destroyed his 40-year marriage.

Speaking at an event celebrating Prof. Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday, Mohammed highlighted the widespread issue of fake news during his tenure as minister, emphasizing its damaging effects.

Mohammed recounted a late-night incident in 2018 when his wife woke him to discuss a serious matter. She had heard a rumor about a foreign account containing $1.3 billion attributed to him. Despite his efforts to explain the falsehood, his wife remained unconvinced, reflecting the widespread belief in the fake news.

The former minister struggled to prove his innocence, even using official budget documents to debunk the outrageous claims. However, his wife’s friends continued to believe the falsehood, straining their relationship and casting doubt on his integrity.

Mohammed condemned the proliferation of fake news on social media platforms, citing instances of false information targeting government officials, including former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu. He warned of the dire consequences of misinformation, which can undermine democracy and public safety.

Advocating for accountability, Mohammed urged regulatory frameworks to hold social media platforms responsible for spreading false information. He called on these platforms to prioritize the integrity of information over profit and take proactive measures to combat misinformation.
